Here’s something that might absorb young ones during the Christmas holiday. The Serpentine Gallery has an annual Build Your Own Pavilion: Young Architects Competition and it’s website has a range of architectural resources, an online image gallery, tutorials, and a showcase of previous pavilions. There’s guidance on the principles of architectural design and a toolkit of useful information whether children are making physical models or using 3D design and printing.
For inspiration, here are this year’s Pavilion Design winners (pic above) clockwise from top left, Jonah, age 8; Filipp, age 9; Troy, age 11; and Elijah, age 11. Jonah says who would build his pavilion out of gold in a secret location. Perfect idea. buildyourownpavilion.serpentinegalleries
Architects of Serpentine Pavilions, including Bjarke Ingels, Asif Khan, Yona Friedman, Sou Fujimoto, Smiljan Radić and selgascano can be seen on YouTube making their own models from simple materials, including paper, masking tape and wire.
Also, worth a Christmas visit is Zaha Hadid: Early Paintings and Drawings at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery. open 10am – 6pm but don’t forget, closed on Mondays.
