Top two carnival organisers resign

The future of the Notting Hill carnival has been thrown into doubt with the news that its two main organisers have resigned. The 46 year old carnival was a great success this year, with crime down even though up to a million people were there to enjoy the colour, drama and music of the event. Carnival co-directors, Ancil Barclay and Chris Boothman say the event has become impossible to manage on a voluntary basis and needs proper funding. ¬†Barclay is quoted in the Guardian as saying: “Each year we have a spectacular display but behind the scenes it is dysfunctional to the core. It should be creating employment, it should be educational – it could be so much more with proper investment. I hope that the next people can take it to the next level, but that is not something you can do on a voluntary basis.”
