To have and to hold

HOLD by Julia Vance is a new sculpture in the Napoleon Garden. Vance has given a physical form with a tactile body to the word Hold. You can just look at HOLD, you can touch it or you if you need a hug you can get physical and crawl inside. Maybe leave that to little ones.

Having started her career as a calligrapher, words are at the heart of Vance’s work. She says: “We use language to express, understand, and shape a thought. I want to clarify that unexpected thought, or to grasp the multiple delicate nuances of what a single word holds.”

RBKC has collaborated since 2012 with Royal British Society of Sculptors to celebrate the contribution of women to sculpture in a series of contemporary work in the historic space of Napoleon Gardens. Thursday 21 May – 2 November in the Napoleon Garden, Holland Park. rbs.org
