This Boy by Alan Johnson

UnknownI have just read a brilliant book, This Boy by labour stalwart Alan Johnson, chronicling his impoverished childhood in Notting Hill. It is a deeply moving account of the tremendous struggle his mother Lilly had to make ends meet in post war Britain and how his amazing sister Linda coped after Lilly had died. Guaranteed to keep you up at night as you race though and the final two pages will have you gulping. Winner of the Orwell Prize, Johnson manages to retell this harrowing story with not one shred of self pity but with humour and wit. If it has passed you by I (for what  it is worth) highly recommend it. lutyensrubinstein and Alan_Johnson
