Ruby Wax awarded OBE

Enlightened, wise and witty local Ruby Wax has been awarded an OBE – Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – this week for services to mental health. Through talking about her own mental health history she has taken the sting of shame away from others with similar issues, especially with depression, and highlighted how practicing a type of daily meditation, mindfulness, can help. Wax chose to be awarded the OBE, which is honorary as she is not yet a British citizen, at the treatment centre for mental health disorders The Priory in Richmond, which helped her when she collapsed with depression. Wax says she chose The Priory “To celebrate the fact that the stigma around mental health is becoming a thing of the past. There’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

Her new book A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled is well worth a read and includes a six week mindfulness course, so you can learn how to do it yourself. rubywax
