Notting Hill B&Bs

Screen Shot 2014-03-14 at 09.59.37Renting out a spare room has become a great way of earning extra cash for several Notting Hill families. The business is run by Maggie Dobson who started renting out her own spare room  before starting At Home in London 27 years ago with four B&B’s in our area. From the beginning Dobson has worked with Visit Britain and says: “The big draw for homes in this area is Portobello Market. People from India and China like to see how English people live, even how people lay the table. It makes their visit much more intimate.” Hosts need to be sociable people, says Dobson, as they have to be able to welcome people into their home. You can make about £70 a night out of a spare room. Dobson adds that because dates can be set to have guests for a few nights when the house is quiet, some people start renting out a spare room once their children have flown the nest. She says: “I visit all the homes, I never take on anyone I haven’t seen.”  www.athomeinlondon
