New birthday season at The Gate Theatre

images-1Christopher Haydon is very busy as the artistic director of the Gate Theatre putting together his most ambitious season to date. ‘Who Does She Think She Is?’ is the Autumn (and Gate’s birthday) season and comprises three plays (all UK premiers) which will look at identity through the prism of female protagonists. Alongside this there is a Gala to celebrate The Gate’s 35th birthday and Grounded, the amazing play about a female fighter pilot, which is touring in the States. The Edge of our Bodies is first up in September and Haydon is directing. It is a play he read a while ago, which has stayed with him, he describes it as a female Catcher in the Rye about a 16 year old who discovers she is pregnant. Following this is Chimera which looks at the eponymous syndrome where you absorb your twin in the womb, so the protagonist discovers she is her own twin – I’m already fascinated. Finally The Chronicles of Kakli is about a girl who disappears and has either run away or is the 10th incarnation of Vishnu and has ascended into heaven. Haydon is a very down to earth i.e. unpretentious, artistic director whose plays to date have been 100% excellent. He says he has realised that audiences just love to see really good actors perform. So far he has achieved this with great scripts and from what I have seen completely amazing performers. The Gate needs to raise one third of its turnover from fund raising (roughly £200 grand) and so needs locals to help it either by making up the audience or by becoming supporters. Haydon really values the theatre’s relationship with the local community and says Gate supporters get a truly personal experience. Book now for the Autumn plays, they will be top notch and you can buy tickets for all three for £33 at the mo – Haydon says The Edge of our Bodies is particularly good for teenagers. I remember someone once saying to me “if only we had a theatre in Notting Hill”. Well we have one of the best and it is 35 years old. gatetheatre
