Amidst all the criticism of the fabulous Notting Hill Carnival, there is one person who has been honoured. Leslie Palmer (pic top) has been awarded an MBE for his services to performance and the London community in the 2017 New Year’s Honours list. Lesley is credited as being a pioneer of the modern Notting Hill Carnival, helping transform a local community carnival into a nationally recognised event. From 1973 to 1975 he worked as director of the carnival, and instead of it being mainly a Trinidadian carnival it embraced all the Caribbean islands. Also, he secured sponsorship, recruited more steel bands, reggae groups and the static sound systems as well as extending the route.
