Local inconvenience

In response to local pressure (‘scuse the pun) the Talbot Road public loos were ceremonially opened by the Mayor, Julie Mills, last Friday, 16th September. Sadly they are only for the convenience of tourists on Fridays and Saturdays. On the other days of the week, market regulars are seen dashing into Kitchen and Pantry and the like, with apologetic grimaces.

Locals are campaigning for the loos to open every day, with a Sunday to Thursday (very) graphic image (see left and it is a question mark coming out of her bum). Nice pics on Facebook – http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?

  • It is a welcome move for RBKC to re-open Portobello’s Victorian public lavatories & they are splendid. The refurbishment cost the public upwards of £500,000. It makes no sense to open them only 2 days a week. Street traders, residents & visitors need facilities 6 days a week. The 2 existing Portobello autoloos are necessary for the disabled etc. Each costs residents £30,000 a year; but they are nasty & often out of order. The Council owes the public high quality lavatory facilities in all areas of the Royal Borough.

  • If your readers go to the “Portobello and Golborne Road Markets” Facebook page they will find some photos taken on the day. I have posted an album of seven photos there, plus a video of Councillor Paget-Brown reading a poem especially composed for the occasion! Norman Craig (Normko) also has photos on Flickr.

  • The right to pee – is quite basic and it is incredible that locals have to cross their legs while these brand spanking new loos are sitting idle and locked… here here OPEN THE LOOS please.
