Most stylish photographer

12. Muriel Maxwell, American Vogue, 1939 © Condé NastHorst EstateHorst’s photographs make you thirsty to look and look again at his fabulous images. You leave this latest V&A exhibition with a definite spring in your step. The diversity of Horst’s work, which he continued passionately for 60 years, focuses on fashion but there are also surrealist works, a really beautiful study of feet, up-close images of delicate seeds and insect wings then travel photographs, masses of interior images and a stunning set of male nudes lent by Elton John and John Furnish. Some of the glamorous early fashion shots show what life was like pre-photoshop. In 1938, celebrated model Lud cut off part of her breasts and thighs for a ‘better figure.’ The 250-picture show has been beautifully curated by Susanna Brown, who says the exhibition: “Reveals a good deal about his working methods.” Hugely recommended, Horst had an amazing way with light, composition and style. From this Saturday, 6 September-4 January. Tickets £9 or £6 for students and under 17s.
