Goldfinches, not the Donna Tartt kind but real ones, have increased on bird feeders in the last 20 years. Scientists don’t know why (good guess, they like sunflower seeds), but it all needs to be scientifically assessed. If we help do a survey the boffs at How important is the food we put out or which plants we grow? Do they truly prefer nyger seed or is sunflower seed their choice treat? (am betting the sunflowers), are they displacing other birds? Hope the little Blue Tits aren’t being pushed out.
Using your counts the British Trust for Ornithology will investigate the factors behind the increase of Goldfinches and uncover their feeding habits. To take part, you to spend two minutes watching the Goldfinches in your garden, and tell the survey team how many you see and what they are feeding on. The Goldfinch Feeding Survey is running now until February 2016 and you don’t need to feed birds to take part in this survey. It will support new research being undertaken by BTO Research Ecologist Kate Plummer. bto.org The book’s good too (pic right).
