Garden waste scheme binned

It’s pitchforks at dawn. We have been told that the council will no longer be collecting our garden waste every fortnight. It was such a great and loved plan … we were all given strong green bags to fill with our prunings, leaves and branches which were taken off to be composted. It was all a win win. Recycling, good for the environment, tidy. Crumbly compost. Probably some worms involved. Now we are supposed to put spiky branches in thin black bags and put them out with the rubbish to be incinerated. Oh no, no, no. that is not a good ecologically sound solution, and RBKC must know that us gardeners are very keen environmentalists too. According to the letter circulating,  if there are 1,500 signatures the petition must go to a full cabinet council meeting and there is a strong possibility that the decision can be reversed. As one resident says of the current celebrated RBKC composting scheme: “I scratch my head to know what we should do without this service.” Grassroots protest going on here, and you can sign at  …  consultation.rbkc.gov.uk
