Dresses for hot dates

Pop up Portobello today and under the tented bit you will find Elaine Bernstein and the lovely dresses she designs. They are made from a special polyester crepe to emulate the viscose crepe used to make the designs in the 1940s.  At £130 for a short one and £185 for long, they are less expensive than ones you find in shops because, Bernstein says: “It cuts out the middle man. If they were sold in shops it would be easily double [the price].” Bernstein, who is the third generation of fashion workers in her family, also makes dresses in wonderful wool crepe, at £155 they are gorgeous. They are made in a factory in London and the wool comes from mills in Bradford. Bernstein says: “I’m really into making them in Britain.” There are some carefully chosen and gorgeous vintage ones too. Red velvet Christian Dior anyone? ElaineBernstein
