If you area still off the booze there is a great alcohol-free cocktail bar in Chepstow Road. Catherine Salway, trying to rescue an alcoholic boyfriend from his addiction soon realised there was nowhere to go in the evening without booze on the menu. So she decided to create an alcohol-free bar and has called it Redemption. Salway says of alcohol-free venues: “I don’t think it’s a fad. There is a whole cultural and social change going on, which I think is really positive. For young people, drink is becoming less of a social necessity or a crutch.”
Teetotalism is on the rise and mixologists are applying their talents to create non-alcoholic drinks which taste as good as any boozy cocktail. According to an Office for National Statistics’ report last year, more than one in five adults (21%) do not drink alcohol at all. Young adults aged 16 to 24 were the main cause of the fall in numbers, with the proportion of young adults who reported that they do not drink alcohol at all increasing by more than 40% between 2005 and 2013. Almost a third of adults in London (32%) say they never drink alcohol. These may of course not drink for religious reasons. The report didn’t take account of that.
Anyway, this is all perfect for all Notting Hill health nuts, people on medication or others who just want to detox over and over again. And people who don’t really like the taste of wine or beer anyway.
You can get food there too but it may be a step too far – a nutritional therapist has devised a food menu that only contains vegan, gluten-free and raw dishes. Maybe just a nice red cocktail. Redemption, 6 Chepstow Road redemptionbar
