Carnival sideboards and Tom Dixon tables at Goldfinger Factory

Some of the really great furniture coming out of the Goldfinger Factory are made using hoardings taken down after the Notting Hill Carnival, like this sideboard (above). This is a big week for Goldfinger Factory as it’s crowdfunding, where you can put in as little as £5 to pay for more apprentices, went live yesterday. Goldfinger Factory’s motto is ’empowering communities to transform waste into gold’ and it’s two apprentices, Alaa and Jake (right) are doing just that, working untitled-3alongside skilled craftsmen putting the final touches on the Tom Dixon Trellick furniture we wrote about a couple of weeks ago. Big spenders like luxury group Hermes which is big on craftsmanship, funds one of the apprentices for two years, but if a lot of us help in a small way there will be money for more trainees and even more upcycling and design hubs like Goldfinger Factory. The Factory is a community interest company with legal restrictions that mean it must use a proportion of its profits for the social good, so the money will be well spent.
