It is so hot and it is a great time to go off to the canal to feel the cool water breeze before we are in the midst of Notting Hill Carnival. There are around 2,000 miles of canalways in England and Wales and it is good to have one close, off Ladbroke Grove, that is so colourful, interesting and peaceful and, dreamily, is part of the Grand Union Canal which links London to Birmingham, passing through rolling countryside, industrial towns and peaceful villages. It is England’s longest canal and was never constructed as an entity, but is the result of amalgamations between 1894 and 1929.
Worth going with a dog or with a bicycle and head up to Camden. On the way it’s worth looking out for the artworks on the other side of the canal path (pic right). There are beautiful ceramic paintings and sculptures made by one man. Feel a bit cooler already. The agency which looks after it is the Canal and River Trust Canalrivertrust
