Local fashion designer Bella Freud is famous for her jumpers which say things like Je t’aime Jane, Ginsberg is God and 1970. Perhaps there will be a new one which says #Golbornefabulous or Golborne’s Rude or maybe #LoveGolborne on Alexa Chung anytime soon as Freud launches a campaign to preserve the road we know and love.
Freud (pic left) says in the petition: ‘Golborne Road is one of the few remaining authentic markets in West London. You can still get a bargain antique, a good piece of vintage and a tasty meal from the food stalls and cafes. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea wants to gentrify it by widening the pavements and adding a complicated drainage system. A long period of disruption will harm people’s livelihoods and could change the area forever. All of us love this unique place for its friendliness and sense of community. We refuse to see this spirit replaced with chain stores and expensive boutiques.’ At the last look the petition already has close to 3,000 signatures. Here’s where to sign if you feel Freud’s pain save-golborne-road
These are the changes RBKC is proposing: raising the market stall area to pavement level and re-profiling to solve the drainage problems, repaving the pavements (but retaining their current width), installing new streetlights which are suitable for hanging banners and Christmas decorations and will make the road brighter at night; planting five more trees; replacing angled parking bays with parallel bays to improve the connectivity of Golborne Road and providing raised tables at the junctions of Portobello Road and Wornington Road to slow vehicles and assist pedestrians crossing the road rbkc.gov.uk
