A debate about the refugee crisis

Angela Merkel has described the refugee crisis as “one of the greatest litmus tests Europe has ever faced”. To search for answers and debate the complex situation Intelligence Squared is bringing together a panel of speakers with diverse views from across Europe. Quizzing and challenging them will be executive editor and columnist at the Guardian, author and broadcaster Jonathan Freedland.

Speakers include:

  • Pia Oberoi, adviser on migration and human rights at the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. She has advised NGOs and think-tanks around the world on migrant and refugee rights.
  • Dr Balázs Orbán, director of Research at the Századvég Foundation in Hungary, a conservative think tank which is the official adviser to the Hungarian government on migration matters. He is also director general at the Institute for Migration Research in Budapest.
  • Sir Malcolm Rifkind, our former MP, who held several cabinet roles under Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major, including Defence Secretary (1992–1995) and Foreign Secretary (1995–1997).

Hear the arguments and have your chance to put your questions to the panel. At the Royal Geographical Society, Wednesday, 25th November, 7pm, Tickets £30 or £15 if you are a student from here … intelligencesquared.com
