The planning department has stepped in to save one of Norland Ward’s last pubs, The Academy in Princedale Road, which was threatened with closure when owners tried to change its use from pub to Art Gallery. In the last 10 years Norland has lost the Prince of Wales, the Norland Arms, the Duke of Clarence, the Earl of Zetland, The Star and the Portland Arms. But all is well. The planning department stepped in and issued an Article 4 direction on The Academy to protect its status as a pub. The Academy’s owners, the Wellington Pub Company owned by the Reuben brothers, David and Simon, then withdrew their application. During the kerfuffle one Norland resident became emotional and described The Academy as: “… the beating heart of our community.” It does really good chips too.
