Portobello Market is celebrated for its amazingly diverse food offerings. The market is crammed with fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meat – there is really no excuse not to eat locally. This is the first in a series of articles that will show you just how easy it is to buy and cook gloriously scrummy food – without needing to leave Portobello Road or stepping foot into a supermarket!
This week I paid a visit to G.Piper and Son Fishmongers at 101 Portobello Road (just outside Tesco). This market stall actually precedes the 150 anniversary of the market – when originally it was a fruit and vegetable selling wheelbarrow in the 1800s. Passed on through generation after generation of the Piper family, the stall is now run by Gary Piper and these days sells only fish. Surrounded by trays of shiny mussels, juicy scallops, the freshest cod and haddock and the delicious salmon and prawns, you will find Gary on Portobello every Friday and Saturday from 7am onwards.
